Is spec work ever okay?
-
Is it okay when you are just starting out? Is it okay if you really want to do the project? Is it okay just to participate for fun?

It's your life, do what you want.
I do them sometimes for a laugh, or to try create better things than other people because it challenges me vs other designers, so i have to create something amazing. -
I know this is an old topic, however I've recently encountered a situation that fits this quite well.
I've always always always been anti-spec, as I feel that on the whole it harms the industry more than helping it. However, I was recently approached by a duo who run a successful on-line magazine, about developing a new site for another magazine they're launching.
Due to the success of their previous venture (which I obviously verified), I decided that it may well be worth the "risk" of developing their site for them, on the promise of profit share. Whether or not it's a good idea, I guess we'll find out in a month or two once it's launched and running.
My point is this: I still feel, that on the whole, spec work is BAD. However, there are certain situations where it can be wise to consider, especially if you've got the time spare (so as not to detract from paying clients), and you recognise a genuine potential.

I don't know if I would consider that spec work since the end result is that you should be getting paid, assuming the people know how to run a business. It is still really risky, but its the equivalent (kinda) of working for a startup and getting equity instead of a paycheck.
Definitely hope it works out for you though. -
It would depend on your definition of "spec" I guess - Some consider spec work to be only that "which could lead to more work", whereas I consider it to include "if it works out, you'll get a % of the profits". Much the same thing, with basically the same risks.
Hopefully, I'll be rich in a year, and can retire a (relatively) young man! -
I guess what I'm trying to say is that when you have a creative mind or an inventive mind, you never stop wanting to create. Unfortunately we live in a world where you need to make some green to pay for the necessities so only a fortunate amount of people are able to not worry about that aspect of life and can focus solely on just creating (or as you called it "dabbling").
