Reactable: the synthesizer redesigned
-
The video says it all; I'm speechless.

I wish I knew more about music to full understand what is going on here, but it looks awesome. How would this help musicians? Seems like it would only be good for producers in the studio or maybe DJs?

Basically it takes the synthesizer and gives it a massive usability makeover. Before, you could do everything the reactable does, but with a lot more fiddling about and knob-twiddling. By using a canvas (or table) and a series of tiles, you create a more visual field for your sound generation.
Yes, it's almost a studio on its own, and would really come into its own as a production tool, but it's also a really interesting live instrument with much more responsiveness from a musician's point of view. If you're performing a song with a lot of pre-programmed parts, this synth would make it much more intuitive, and give you more scope to 'jam' the track like someone playing a regular instrument. -
I guess I'd have to see how musicians use a synthesizer now to see what this offers over anything. My two years of viola training taught me absolutely nothing apparently. Sigh.
