Johnny is right Erica, dont loose your time with IE5.5. I have to test my design with IE5.5- because i live in Peru, and many pp have old machines. So, as Johnny said, don't worry about IE5.5-, unless a large proportion of your audience use it that is.

@ Erica - I wouldn't lose sleep over IE 5.5 unless a large proportion of your audience use it that is.
Personally I don't even bother testing in IE 5.5.
IE 6 is the lowest common denominator for me (visual graphic browsers)
I think Jakob Nielsen said that if there is less than 10% visiting your site using a certain browser then it is acceptable to stop supporting that browser.

All the browsers you have covered should give you no problems, so don't worry about IE 5.5!

I like progressive enhancement_a_lot!! :-)

elixir2004 I have downloaded it and tried ie5.5, and I am not sure I am going to get it to work in that version :(.

The bottom half is actually a spry from Dreamweaver using JS and CSS. I have tried to tweak it in multiple places, but I have a feeling that the CSS is what is not rendering correctly in ie 5.5. I am not sure if that version of the browser has the correct support for the version of CSS I am using. either that, or it is the Javascript. But, either way.. I am not sure I am going to get it to render much better under 5.5. I will keep looking and trying though.

As of right now, I should have it working correctly on

IE 6, 7 and 8 (windows)

Safari 3 (windows)

Firefox 2 and 3 (windows)

Opera 10 (windows)

Flock (windows)

Sea Monkey (windows)

Thanks elixir2004!
I was unaware of the standalone version , so I have not tested with it before. Usually, I try to get sites to work right in ie6 + but now that I know of this, I will download it and give it a try. Thanks for the heads up on that!

Hi Erica, your design look great in IE6, but the footer navigation area looks weird in IE5.5 and the menu doesn't work.
I always use the standalone version of IE (3.0 - 5.5) to test my designs.

Well, I figured out what the problem was - and it was a strange problem I had not seen before.

When i saved the back.jpg for the background, I was saving it with the "progressive" checked. But, if I unchecked the "progressive" it saved it and IE 6.0.2900 that came with the XP image (From MS for developers - they distribute an XP image with IE 6 so people can test ie 6 under Microsoft Virtual PC) showed it just fine.

So now, I am wondering if the "progressive" form of images exported from Adobe PS and Illustrator present a problem with this version of IE. I tested it multiple times with multiple images and every time - same result - If I saved an image progressive, it would not display in IE6 ^ but if I unchecked it, it is fine.

Weird.

Thanks Oli!
I am trying to at work today.. and here on 6.0 ie I noticed something strange.. the top half looked fine, but the bottom half was all white.. not sure what is up with that. Nor am I sure why it (halfway) works here but doesnt work at all at home.

I am going to forward myself a screenshot from here so I can look more into it at home.. very strange! It seems to show up fine on yours... IE always seems to make me shake my head.. I almost dread V8 coming out.

Hi.
I have IE 7, but I test with IE 6 on Virtual PC (MS). When I test a site I am working on using Virtual PC with IE 6, it does not show my background - the illustration part of the site and the whole background is just dark brown.

example ie6 with virtualpc

example in firefox

Can anyone with IE6 confirm that the illustration does not show like in the example ie6 with virtualpc above, or do you all see the illustration as in the firefox example above ? Thanks
Erica
