LogoMaid Rips Off SimpleBits Logo?

I'm sure many within the 9rules design community are already aware of this controversy, but I thought I'd post a quick note for those who, like me, missed it yesterday.
After posting a screen shot on his Flickr account, Dan Cederholm has ignited a small debate (although, there arguably isn't much to debate) about whether or not LogoMaid stole the design of his SimpleBits logo.
Paul Viluda, owner of LogoMaid, has responded by accusing Cederholm of stealing their work and has threatened him with a lawsuit. One Flickr user posted a neat transitional image showing the differences between the two logos, I did a write-up on my site, John Gruber has weighed in, and the story hit the front page of Digg today. The comments thread on Flickr is also a great read.
What do you guys think? Is this as obvious a ripoff as I think it is? Are people overreacting? What do you think of Viluda's response?

They could make the greatest logo in the world, but ti doesn't matter much if it's stolen from another designer.

Yes! It's a rip. Just small change in the shape will not make it unique.

Yep, a bit of a rip off, and SimpleBits isn't the only victim:
LogoMaid - Imitation or Theft? - A post on Godbit.com that encouraged me to blog about this subject too. Godbit have had their logo ripped off too.

Why isn't there some kind of government site you can go to for logo/design/content theft? I know you might be able to start a costly legal battle - but who is going to do that for a $300+ logo?
We could also attack their hosting - but they will just get a new host.
So, I guess for now we just need to collectively diss' these sites - lets use our voices! (and blogs)

Short answer... copyright your work. If you can back up your claim with legal paperwork showing the creation date and that you own the brand/identity then it's MUCH easier to push on the copycat.
If you're just hurling words back and forth all you have to lean on is hope that they'll see things your way.

Looks like a rip to me. Granted they changed the colors and swapped out the cube for a house, but it seems to me the concept is too similar for it to really be an original work.
