Personally, I don't think anyone has to be "guilty" of using the silk icon set - it's a fantastic set of icons.
I totally agree with BinaryMoon, icons, when used to help depict an action, or what something is can be tremendously helpful. A quick example would be the rss icon - it helps to denote that a specific link is different than all the rest.
Certainly, just like anything, icon usage can be used to the point to detract from an overall design. The same can be said about gradient usage, or mirrored effect, etc.. In the end, it's all about personal taste, design flow and color usage, and usability imho.
