what's your css for the ol's and li's? If you have a width: 100% for either your ol's and li's, that might be the problem. Try changing this in an IE specific stylesheet.

Of course someone had to upload a picture of Jessica Alba...
It looks really awesome. I'd start playing with it, but I'm afraid I already have too many distractions at the moment. I'll be sure to check back when I have time to procrastinate. :)
I was hoping it would have an Umbrella-ella-ella (eh eh eh) in the header.
Don't look at me like that. Someone had to say it.
That's what I thought when I read the note title. You aren't the only one Ryan. :)
Aside from that...
It's a really simple theme and I like that.
Things I would change:
The forums work really well with your site design and blend nicely. The more I play around with it, I'm sure I'll come across some more little things. I don't see/haven't found anything major though.
I agree with the snap.com links. If I visit a site that uses them, I just simply don't go back. That's how annoyed I get by them.
It also bothers me when there's a crapload of links in sidebars. I can see a small blog roll, but when you put a link to every site that you visit, it gets annoying.
Another thing that bothers me: really long sidebars. If a sidebar is loaded down with content that isn't necessary, but people put there just to put it there.
Thanks carmody. I completely forgot about those. Bad of me. :P
I've done a fair amount of research on branding and logo design. I'm no expert however, and I would love to find out which sites, books, etc. you think are the best resources on the topic.
I'm currently in the process of creating a brand and identity for a business. You know, the thing that's kept me busy and away from 9rules Notes.
Thanks everyone :)
Well, if you want interaction on a certain post, make it interactive. Ask a question at the end such as "What do you all think about that situation? I'd like some feedback." etc. Sometimes all it takes is asking. :)
What I did: I stopped caring about the traffic and started caring about what I wanted to write about. You aren't writing for a crowd, you're writing for yourself. People will eventually come and check it out. my9r is a great place to meet people, gain some new friends, get input on your site (whether that be design or content wise) and just have a great time.
Another thing, start commenting on other people's sites that you enjoy. Be an involved reader, but also be involved on your own blog. If someone comments on one of your posts, reply back to the comment. When people see that you are approachable like that, they'll stick around just for the interaction with you.
There's always going to be someone, something, whether that be a design or not, that's going to put our skills to shame. I don't have the graphic skillz like some people that I know, know of, etc., but I do the best I can do, and each time I try to push myself to try something new, harder, and different. That's all that I can do. If someone happens to have a better design, then great for them, but my site isn't about my design, it's about my content, or more to the point, my life.
If you have a blog that's based on a design topic, then sure, you should have an amazing look, but all the same, there's always those people who are going to one up us in some way or another. That's what you get when so many people discovered the interwebs.
I find it helps to have a Potential Design folder. If I'm already halfway through a project and I come up with the Best Design Ever, I make a quick Photoshop sketch and throw it in that Potential Design Folder.
I do that too. I have a folder with tons of half-finished, half-started, and completed mockups that just never saw the code of day.
I used to do that a lot. I would come out with a new design every week to every two weeks. I've settled down some though, because I've found that the more I learn, the more complicated things I want to implement and I just don't have time for it anymore.
I'm working on a new design right now actually, but I'm still in the concept stage. I'm not going to start coding until I'm relatively satisfied with what I have down in a graphic mock up.
The sidebar font seems to grab my attention before the font in the main section. Make it bigger, maybe add some line-height, or try just removing the italics on the sidebar.
Lisa, you must tell me you you're crushing on. I don't like competition.
There are a lot of hot girls on 9rules. Dude, why do you think I'm here? So I can get my flirt on. I'm just kidding. But the hot girls doesn't hurt...:p
Right now, everyone should go read about Ann Helmond's experiences in creating different photo blogs. Go, now, read!
Yes Ma'am! Actually, I did read it, and it was very good. It's a great solution to the "how do I get my photos on my website in a gallery" question.
For del.icio.us you can go to your account settings and they'll show you all the options they have for integrating with blogs. You can style it to match your blog as well.
Asides would probably be the best option, but you can look into it and decide. See this for how to add asides.
I've used it before and loved it.
Ha. It really depends on who's taking the picture. If I let my sisters take my picture, I'd look really weird and flushed out, because they always use the flash, no matter what, and they can never keep the camera still. They like to center me in the pic, which is horrible, making it look boring.
My ex girlfriend had a way of taking my picture that always suggested that there was something more to me, something mysterious, but easily found. If that makes sense. She knew how to capture me, in other words.
In general though, I'm not photogenic, or I have friends that take horrible pictures. One of the two.
Those are really awesome Ryan! I might have to borrow some...:)
lol Ryan. Not lame at all. I laughed out loud. And we all know that I'm awesome, not lame, thus, you are not lame. :)
That is one kick ass lamp! Now if only something like that was affordable, then I'd be all set.
Well, I think it worked. I didn't drink that much in high school. There wasn't any point, because if I really wanted to drink I could ask my dad and I already knew that a bunch of minors at a party, drunk, wasn't going to be a good idea. Then when I got to college I drank socially, but nothing too big. Now, I go out and get smashed once in awhile, but not often. Sometimes I'll drink socially. But when I was with my ex, I didn't drink at all. The closest thing I came to drinking was the virgin pina coladas at an office party.
I'll come and confiscate the beer. Ha. My dad used to give me beer...when I was 8. Not like a lot though. And there isn't any photographic evidence. Of course, when I was 8, digital cameras were just a dream.
Give me a flavor and I'll whip it up. :)
I make really awesome margaritas.
I should carry my camera around more as well. I like documenting my life, memories, what have you. Sharing them with others is just icing. :)
I heard about this. Cinco de Mayo! I don't know if I'll participate. I'll try. But I'm certainly looking forward to the outcome of it all.
Thanks. Some of those look pretty awesome so far. :)
I was just going to ask this actually. I knew about Squidfingers, but nothing there that really fits with me. :)
