» Thinning fonts on the web  ...  Last Reply: 2 months ago by alexsuraci.

Still too many variables involved, platform, browser etc to get the customization that designers have been craving. I would assume something is in place for CSS3, but that has been in the works since 1885.

» Font / Background contrast  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by Ozone42.

I think it depends greatly on what the colors are, when you are talking about two colors that are in complete contrast with each other (white font on black background) then no it isn't easier. Throw in an off-white with a gray background like the one seen at Daring Fireball then I can see how it is easier to read.

» Flexible or Fixed layout for a blog?  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by kailoon.

For a simple blog always go with fixed in my opinion. Screens are getting larger, but that doesn't mean you should make people read billboard sized lines.

Throw in a mobile stylesheet for the iPhone people if you want flex on mobile devices.

» 2008 Web Design Trends  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

Yeah but how many great interactive videos (doesn't seem an easy thing to develop) will come out? You are finding the niche of all niches it seems or maybe something that will serve as a great feature on the back of the box.

» 2008 Web Design Trends  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

Wow that interactive video is mad slick. Video is the future if it can be combined with static/text in a smart way. People thought Flash was the future before, but it took a while till they found the right balance of it.

Others say the future is in mobile and video doesn't have that strong of a place there in my opinion.

» Fatdoor finally has a public offering after tons of funding and privacy issue concerns  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by Scrivs.

To me this seems like something that is great in concept, but at the moment might not play out right. Kind of something before its time because I'm not sure people are still secure about letting people know these types of things. But then again, people seem to have no problem posting this information on Facebook or Myspace.

I would actually focus on the younger demographics because they like to find people with the same interests just as much as adults and would be more willing to participate in such a thing. Today's adults didn't grow up with social networking tools and some are still getting used while others don't bother with them or know about them at all.

Also tools like this become more useful when there is a mobile aspect involved. Doesn't seem that much more than Meetup with some social networking involved though.

What is fatdoor supposed to be?

» MySpace new design launched  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by alexsuraci.

I think it does the job perfectly because you have to remember that Myspace mad it's mark because of its ghetto design and I don't think the goal was to come up with something revolutionary, just something clean along the lines of Facebook. I think they succeeded in doing so and have essentially taken away the one advantage that Facebook had.

The people who define a trend are the followers. They like something they see on a site and they go for it. Then their followers copy and the cycle continues to repeat. It's the designers that can recognize trends, apply them when needed and avoid them when necessary that will stand out from the crowd.

Some trends are meant to happen, like bigger type for example, while others (grunge) or just a fad.

On the homepage I would like more of a description of what it is. As it stands now you get almost zero information unless you click somewhere so it seems a bit of a waste. The aesthetics of the page are nice though.

All three operaing systems come with a variety of fonts, many of which can be reasonably substitued for each other without affecting the design. You can also choose fonts that have the same look and feel that you want, but may not be close matches. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

You may have noticed that Google has a new favicon, the small icon you see in your browser next to the URL or in your bookmarks list. Some people have wondered why we changed our favicon -- after all, we hadn't in 8.5 years(!). The reason is that we wanted to develop a set of icons that would scale better to some new platforms like the iPhone and other mobile devices. So the new favicon is one of those, but we've also developed a group of logo-based icons that all hang together as a unified set.

Site suggestions for Drawar Superstream on 5/29 @9pm

Design Community — Posted: May. 29, 2008  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 5 months ago

The Drawar Superstream is happening tonight at 9pm (or tomorrow depending on where you are at the moment) and Mike and I will be gracing the video screens. Since this is the "design" site I figured one of the things we could do is provide live design critiques on a couple of sites to get in the minds of how we view the world.

Don't suggest personal sites unless you are the owner of the site and understand we aren't here to blow smoke up your ass. We are here to entertain, be informative and provide cut-throat, brutal honesty. You will be dealing with one of the great designers on the web you know.

This Superstream will also give you a great opportunity to ask Rundle the questions that you always wanted answered like how much of a pain in the ass it is to design with me watching over his shoulder.

Anyways hope everyone can make it.

10 Interesting Things I Learned About Ansel Adams

Photography Community — Posted: May. 15, 2008

We all know about Adams' revolutionary zone system that he pioneered in the development and printing of photographs. But as much as this, Adams was constantly testing out the very latest and prototype cameras from people like Polaroid and Hasselblad. Because he was Ansel Adams, he had a great opportunity to try out so many new technologies as they rolled out. According to Michael, Haselblad had an understanding with Ansel where pretty much anything they built could be on loan to him.

» The Artist vs. The Designer  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by xirclebox.

It is interesting to see people's thoughts on the ability of an individual to "learn" creativity. I think we all have our own type of creativity and that some people are able to bring that out in the open more easily than others. If these types can apply it properly to design then they have a great chance of success.

If you are simply breaking down the definition of an artist vs. designer than to me an artist is simply making real his vision while a designer is solving a problem visually.

» CSS Frameworks?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Scrivs.

It all depends on how often you are using the framework I would think. If you are only putting out a site every once in a while that isn't like what you have done before then by all means go custom. Not like a basic structure in CSS takes time to do up, but if you are releasing sites at a breakneck pace then a standard framework you are familiar with makes perfect sense.
