Really cool tumblelog theme for Wordpress, free.
How to create a faded watercolour effect, like the background of the Viget Inspire blog background.
The Picture Book Effect means you cannot present your content the same way a print publisher might: site design effects the impact and credibility of what you're saying.
Sounds wonderful, Scrivs. I'm still looking for a way to translate your time to Malaysian time, since I always seem to log on after the whole thing's done. Sigh.
Photoshop method for creating a cool watercolour effect from a photo.
For personal reference: possible tumblelog theme for Wordpress.
But I am a geek. When Wordpress 2.5 was released I jumped up and down and told the first friend I could get hold of in Live Messenger to tell him.
That didn't really go well ...
Have you guys heard of AIGA DC's Are You A Virgin design competition? Gotta love the site concept.
Been thinking of joining, but I don't think that'll be possible with my current schedule and location. Great idea they have, tho.
Read sometime back about urban backlash against graffiti ads commissioned by Sony. They were promoting the Sony brand and products, and apparently those corporate figures think the medium art enough to advertise. So ... *shrugs in bewilderment*
I'm going to go bankrupt, RightOn. ='(
I won't agree with that, mStudio. Take reading as an example. You may not be trained as a writer, but you can probably tell when you're reading something good, and when you're reading something bad. You can't tell exactly what makes it work, but, with enough experience, you just know.
It's the same with aesthetics, except you don't even need the experience part. We receive visual stimuli from a very young age (unlike reading, which differs from person to person). So ugly should be apparent to almost anyone. The difference is that there are people out there who care less. Who cares if Myspace looks like shit? My band gets exposure there, it gets things done, why the heck not? Who cares if Craigslist is ugly? I have a cat to sell, she's destroying my apartment and I better get used to it quickly if I have to get rid of her!
And on and on and on.
A collection of free Photoshop brushes, free for download.
Web 3.0? If there ever was one, it would probably adhere to Tim Berners-Lee's vision of a semantic web. He's working his ass off to bring that vision to frution, and it's frankly quite exciting, if a little crazy. Imagine tagging and organizing everything the web has to offer, and make that readable to machines of just about every platform imaginable.
You'll know it's web 3.0 when your microwave starts talking to your PC, your dishwasher arguing with your router, and your TV refusing to start until the Blueray HDDVD wars are over.
Your last theme was good, Mike! And so's this one, so I don't really see the problem.
Nils is right. You can always ask around in the design community ... if I'm not mistaken there was one such request not too long ago, and Dreamweaver snapped it up.
Parallax Scrolling is the effect of backgrounds moving at a different direction in side scroller games (for example: Metroid Fusion). Here's how to do it on a website.
I'm not sure, but I've always loved reading ideasonideas, which thinktanks design. Anybody else reading him?
The title says it all. From Smashing Magazine
@Ralph: is symphony good?
Currently it is just reviews in a rather no non-sense manner, but what else would people like to see?
You know what? I suppose something can be improved, but I'm at a loss. My mouth was opened halfway through your Jesus article, and I bookmarked it shortly after.
What you're doing is brilliant! Explaining what makes a site work as well as showing it is a great idea. Love it love it love it!
PS: perhaps ... user submitted suggestions, or polls as to the next reviewed site?
The 300 effect is that moody, super contrast look. Here's how to do it in photoshop.
Mark Boulton's seminal guide to "knowing your hanging punctuation from your em-dash" typography.
How to make your footer dock at the bottom of the screen.
It's good to see that even the best photographers (and the best cameras) aren't prone to lousy, unfocused photos. =) But this photo essay pretty much captured the chaos and the confusion immediately following the assassination.
It makes a somewhat far-off 'nothing to do with me' event so much more ... 'real', and I can't help but feel thankful for living in a politically stable country.
I don't like garrish cartoons stuck all over a page, and I'm sick of psychedelic colours in a site. It's very disorienting.
That being said, I have no problem at all with a logo that has no connection to the company: it's the company's job to give meaning to the logo itself. How would you explain Apple Computer's logo, or Starbucks, or Nike?
Good to see you back David. Here's to getting your domain fixed ASAP.
That avatar in pixels must've taken ages to do! You've got quite a bunch of friends there, Silvertj.
*I'm jealous* ;P
CSS design from beyond the grave: all the secret ingredients you’ll need to resurrect the image map using CSS and structurally sensible XHTML.
@Cena: oops, I'm sorry. My bad. =(
Found this just the other day ... hope it helps.
Good for inspiration, Robyn Miller keeps a collection of thoughts and images that he needs to rave about. Robyn is one of the creators of Myst.
20+ free and fresh icon sets. Lovely.
Pink brings memories of kindergarden, where I started hating the colour. Apparently my friend coloured the whole sky pink in one picture, and it made such an impression on me that it started off a lifelong revulsion of the colour.
=)
Eh ... how about a nice pink ad somewhere in the layout? Would that be enough? Coz the peeps here (me included) are all worked up about finally seeing ponies in 9rules. I don't want pink just yet. =)
