Most of the time I work in a pretty silent environment by myself..but for some reason, today, I have a Widespread Panic show from '98 blaring in the background while I work on some customer documentation...it's on the house stereo too, because my computer speakers aren't that great...and no-where near as loud...

the white lines are definitely a distraction, and they do have a slight element of...and it's hard to explain, but almost like looking at one of those odd optical illusion images...does that make sense?

I agree with Oli regarding title/date and such on the left side...the related posts seem to take my attention away from the content as well

two things...

the lines are very "distracting", though, you mentioned a possible change in color scheme, so that might help...to me, the white lines are the "distracting" element in that they are very contrast to the design.

your h2 titles, they are kind of small and dark, and overpowered by the white lines. A change of sorts to the h2 titles that makes them a bit more prominent may offset the lines contrast I mentioned

there's my two cents...and dammit...now I'm broke again...

Overall, I really do like the design ! !

*UPDATE*

Well, I've known from the start, that if "I could rewrite" the form, I'd be able to do what I needed to do...well, turns out using phptemplate in Drupal...I can...

so...yet something else to learn...lets see how this goes once I figure out how to rebuild all the variables and whatever else would go in there into the custom template just for that form!

it's AMAZING what a halfway good night's sleep will do...plus some help in the right direction of the use of block:

so I GOT it...and I think I got it right...at least on three browsers...FF/IE/Opera, Safari is still showing it messed up...but also safari acts funky on XP sometimes so...

here is the link with the form in place...had to make some more css adjustments to counter stuff that drupal does, as well as some of the theme css...

Form In Use

Now, and I was able to get the next part somewhat handled, but still running into another issue, and I feel I've got my css right...or mostly...

The drupal module adds two radio buttons to the form when you "move into" your search, IE/FF no problem, a little block/float here and there...and all was right with the world...but, back to the opera problem...nope nadda

so here is the cut version of the form with the radio buttons
[new form]

again, a huge thanks to you two...

*I'll be over here pulling my hair out and trying more combinations of what might/might not work in the meantime*

tried adding just that, as well as tried getting rid of some of the "extra" css, and had those two elements like this:

#faceted-search-ui-form .form-text { /* text box */
background-color: #FFF;
border 1px solid #000;
width:170px;
}
#faceted-search-ui-form .form-submit { /* submit button */
margin-top:2px;
height:20px;
background-color: #FFF;
border: 1px solid #000;
width:60px;
}

plus I've tried who knows how many float: and display: combinations...I think I've even repeated on or two...

also, I've found sometimes, especially when are already in "the mix", taking classes on what I'm already doing, tends to lag me behind a bit, but some years back, I took a simple class in c++, with no intention of ever becoming a programmer, and immediatly, I never felt like I learned much, but some time later, I found the things I did learn there instantly applied to my unix world, whether it was learning perl for the first time, or having to go in and edit kernel or apache source files...

I also don't advertise that I took this class, as it never really applied, but it did sure help my skills at being an engineer.

finally...

If it doesn't work out, that's fine. At least I tried.

Don't take that attitude :) approach this with the zest of "this has got to work", "I can do this"...my first year not having a "real job" SUCKED...but now, I think my skills are catching up to my aspirations, and I feel good about what I do now...

good luck friend :)

here's a couple things you could try

offer your skills towards some pro-bono type charity work you believe in, local church/civic groups/school, etc...and it's a great way to get the word of mouth on you started...

build some open source templates and get them onto sites like opendesigns.org

Help with a div?

Design Community — Posted: Feb. 29, 2008  ...   Last By: trevorlee_nc @ 10 months ago

Ok, this is a strange one to me...generally, or rather, never have I run into something that worked on FF, and IE(6/7), that didn't work on Safari or Opera...so...

basicly it's like this, I want everything in this div to appear straight across. The way the div gets built comes from Drupal and one of it's modules, and if need be, I "probably" could rewrite the code that spits out the form...but I still want to beleive I can get what I want with css..or have almost gotten...

I've been at this all day just about, so while maybe not my last resort, but once I get this relatively lined up...then I can go to work on making the form "real pretty"...

ordered list mystery

Design Community — Posted: Feb. 23, 2008  ...   Last By: trevorlee_nc @ 10 months ago

I've just run into an odd thing...as we're doing our live run through on one of my sites, the wife noticed this:

http://www.homegrownmusic.net/pages/radio-charts

in Opera/FF2/Safari all show the ordered list starting at 1, and ending at 40...

yet in IE (6 or 7), the numbering starts at 1., and ends on 0., then resets at 1. again...

anyone ever seen this, or might see what I am openly missing :)

I think this was the winning ticket:

» css / overlaying SWF  ...  Last Reply: 3 weeks ago by dubsar.

I ran into something "similar" not too long ago...maybe poking around my stuff can help, but if I recall I had to do some playing with z-index's and wmode opaque on the swf object...doesn't work in IE6 though

here is the site I'm talking about: http://www.amjam.net/

sorry, this was the "it worked for me" way :)

» thumbnails preview / PSD files  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by diegooriani.

The psd thumbnail view is not included by design in the lastest version of photoshop. To restore this feature follow these steps:
1. Download psicon.dll from DLL Dump
2. Place the DLL in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell\
3. Thumbnail previews of PSD files are now back

Here is the link to the dll: [link]

» What resolution do you design around?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Mike.

I usually try to keep between 1000-800 wide, generally lately, falling just inside that around 900-950...

though, I've got a recent client that has me building a two col 750px wide site...and he's an architect who uses this giant widescreen monitor with his web browser always fully expanded...go figure right...

» CSS beginners survival kit  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by trevorlee_nc.

the (x)html/css specs is where I started...good reading too, if you like that sort of thing..

"...use the source Luke" :)

then a lot more these days comes from cssplay, a list apart, and others that put forth some great new ideas.

also having firebug installed helps, quick, easy, and painless to see "that's how they did that"....

Reuse of elements?

Design Community — Posted: Jan. 26, 2008  ...   Last By: Christian @ 11 months ago

Just curious what other people think about re-using elements from a design from one customer to another.

I've got a new design I'm working on, that would look great with a footer style that I used on another customer's website. Both are unrelated industries if that matters at all...

also, other than the footer, both sites would look pretty completely different.
