My top-viewed photo on Flickr, with 52,769 views (with 1 fave only!) since uploaded on 2007-07-19 is one that I'd never in a life-time thought would get this popular. I snapped it randomly with my P+S at a co-worker's birthday party:

Of particular interest, however, is to contrast with my top-faved photo (80 faves and 8,907 views since uploaded on 2006-06-29) which is a shot that I am proud of:

But if the top-viewed photo is somehow serving as a landing page for people to eventually get to my good stuff, I have no complaints whatsoever. :)

I did a few things to fix it:

In the object tag add inline css or a class/id with the following definitions:

position:absolute; z-index:0;

And in the embed tag add the wmode="opaque" code:

That fixed the problem on my browser.

You should change the code on your lightbox though, because when the window isn't high enough you can't see the close button. This is specially noticeable in laptops. Oh, and adding a z-index:10 or so on it wouldn't do any harm...

Just make sure you don't do "text-shadow: 0 0 0 #000". The latest WebKit nightlies don't work with that anymore, and instead make the text look funky.

Yeah, I am doing it on my site now via CSS3, but it only works for Safari. Compare the relative boldness on makesitgood.net between firefox and safari. Safari is much easier on the eyes.

Still too many variables involved, platform, browser etc to get the customization that designers have been craving. I would assume something is in place for CSS3, but that has been in the works since 1885.

I like dark backgrounds. The problem with them is that due to the way fonts render in various browsers, and the way our eyes interpret things you can easily get into a case where things are fat, overbolded, and too high contrast to be nice on the eyes.

One solution to this is knockout type using text-shadow in css3. Unfortunately Safari is the only widely used browser that supports this so far.

Other than jumping to siFR or the like for headings, or creating static images, does anyone know a way to slim down fonts on the web?

If you get too much, you get some retina burn in. You've all probably experienced it. Reading bright white text on a solid black background, or bright green text on the same. If you read long enough and look away, you still see lines. That is ghastly.

I took a dark grey and put gold-ish text on it, and I like it pretty well. I read somewhere that some combination like that was optimal for high contrast without afterimages. I wish I remembered where that was so I could point there.

I think it depends greatly on what the colors are, when you are talking about two colors that are in complete contrast with each other (white font on black background) then no it isn't easier. Throw in an off-white with a gray background like the one seen at Daring Fireball then I can see how it is easier to read.

Reading this in 2008 is interesting. Many of us over 40 begin to have 'low vision' issues. Yes, we get our eyes examined and yes, we wear glasses. Contrast is the issue. A white font on a pastel background is virtually impossible even when ‘zoomed’ up. Web designers ought to think of their audience and decide if "artsy" is favored over "readability". This also applies to print media greatly! Magazines today are flooded with small white fonts on pale orange backgrounds. I discuss this with friends of mine and we’re all in agreement on how a generation of readers are being dismissed.

Fred Miranda's Forums are an excellent spot.

Photo.net can be good, but has such a large audience it's hard to find a good niche.

Flickr has lots of groups that do this sort of thing.

I hang out at texasphotoforum, but that's kinda specific to the area :)

Most of the time I work in a pretty silent environment by myself..but for some reason, today, I have a Widespread Panic show from '98 blaring in the background while I work on some customer documentation...it's on the house stereo too, because my computer speakers aren't that great...and no-where near as loud...

you don't want people adapting their use of your site to way their browser works, you want your site to adapt to the ways people use their browsers.

For a simple blog always go with fixed in my opinion. Screens are getting larger, but that doesn't mean you should make people read billboard sized lines.

Throw in a mobile stylesheet for the iPhone people if you want flex on mobile devices.

I've always been a fan of fixed-width layouts because of line-length readability issues that creep up in fluid page designs. Many studies regarding line-length readability have been conducted, and with very few dissenting opinions, optimal readability and comprehension levels for the participants were found to lie at around 60 CPL (characters per line) or around 12 medium-sized words per line. When you start expanding the columns out with a fluid layout you sacrifice comprehension and readability.

Well you can put me on record as a fan of flexible layouts. Things like YAML and 960 make working with them almost fun! I'd seen that article as well and agree a lot with the author - you don't want people adapting their use of your site to way their browser works, you want your site to adapt to the ways people use their browsers.

I just read an article from smashingmagazine about the Flexible Layouts: Challenge For The Future. So, I just wondering if I am doing a blog design. Is it good to use flexible layout?

Things that I consider are:
1. dynamic content
2. different wirtting style of the bloggers
3. cross browsers?

Hmm...well you seem to think that the iPhone is the next great gaming platform, and the video quality and clarity of games these days is getting more realistic all the time. Furthermore, I think it's agreed that what's been achieved with the iPhone is changing the mobile industry. If that's indeed the case, then I would think it easy to imagine doing that interactive video using the iPhone's accelerometer to direct the action.
